Is Saturday or Sunday better for hiking at Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon this weekend?
Saturday is the better day across the Chattahoochee Valley, with afternoon highs of 73 degrees at Callaway Gardens and 75 at Providence Canyon and only single-digit rain chances, while Sunday turns cooler and breezier with shower chances near 36 percent.

If you only get outside once this weekend, make it Saturday. Rain chances at every park in the area stay in the single digits to low teens all day Saturday, and afternoon temperatures reach the low to upper 70s. By Sunday the sky turns over, the morning starts breezy, and shower chances climb toward 40 percent by mid afternoon.
On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk between Columbus and Phenix City, 8 o'clock Saturday morning is 63 degrees with a light 5 mile per hour breeze and a 3 percent rain chance — about as easy as a walk along the water gets at the end of October. By 2 in the afternoon it is 76 degrees, but the wind picks up to 15 miles an hour, which you will feel most in the open stretches above the river. Sunday morning on the same trail is 60 degrees with that 15 mile per hour wind already blowing and a 25 percent rain chance, warming to 70 by 2 with the chance up to 36 percent.
Up on Pine Mountain, Callaway Gardens starts Saturday at 60 degrees with no measurable rain chance at all and reaches 73 by 2 in the afternoon, with the wind freshening to 15 miles an hour. F.D. Roosevelt State Park, out along the ridge toward Warm Springs, is the coolest spot on the list: 60 degrees at 8 Saturday morning, 71 at 2, and then 56 degrees Sunday morning with a 15 mile per hour wind, the chilliest reading anywhere in the area this weekend. Standing at Dowdell's Knob Sunday morning, a windbreaker will earn its keep.
Providence Canyon near Lumpkin runs warmer: 62 degrees at 8 Saturday morning, 75 by 2 with a 10 mile per hour wind, then 60 and 70 on Sunday with rain chances near 27 and 37 percent. Chewacla State Park at Auburn has the mildest start of the weekend, 64 degrees at 8 Saturday morning, climbing to 75 by the afternoon; Sunday there is 62 at 8 and only 68 by 2, with the wind at 15 miles an hour early.
The warmest afternoon in the area belongs to Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula, 77 degrees at 2 Saturday under mostly cloudy sky, after a 63-degree morning. Sunday at Lakepoint is 62 at 8 and 71 at 2, with rain chances near 30 and 38 percent.
So dress in layers Saturday and expect to shed one. A light jacket or long sleeves at 8 in the morning, short sleeves by lunch, and a cap you do not mind holding onto when the afternoon wind comes up along the river and on the ridge. If you are driving over from LaGrange or Opelika on Sunday, swap the jacket for a shell that sheds water and start early, because the shower chances grow through the day rather than fading.
The shortest practical tip of the weekend: the gap between the coolest morning on Pine Mountain and the warmest afternoon at Eufaula is 21 degrees, so what works at one end of the viewing area will not work at the other.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
