Weekend on the Trails: Sunday Afternoon Is the Warmest, Calmest Time Out

What is the weekend weather for hiking at Callaway Gardens and Providence Canyon?

Saturday starts at 47 with a breeze at Callaway Gardens and 50 at Providence Canyon near Lumpkin, while Sunday is calm and sunny with afternoons of 69 at Callaway Gardens, 71 at Providence Canyon and 72 on the RiverWalk in Columbus.

Both weekend days are dry and sunny from the RiverWalk to Providence Canyon, but they are not the same day twice. Saturday morning is cold and a little breezy, Saturday afternoon has a 10 mile an hour wind in places, and Sunday is the softer of the two: calm air from sunrise to sunset and afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. If you only get out once, make it Sunday after lunch.

The spread at 8 AM Saturday is the thing worth knowing before you pick a hat. On the Pine Mountain ridge, Callaway Gardens and F.D. Roosevelt State Park both start at 47 with a 10 mile an hour breeze, which is the coldest-feeling start anywhere in the area. At the same hour, Chewacla State Park outside Auburn is 54 and Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula is 53. That is a seven-degree head start for anyone walking in Auburn or Eufaula instead of in Harris and Meriwether counties.

On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk through Columbus and Phenix City, Saturday begins at 51 under full sun with a light breeze and reaches 68 by 2 PM, when the wind picks up to about 10 miles an hour off the water. Sunday morning is colder at 47 and dead calm, and the afternoon is better in every way: 72 and sunny with no wind at all.

At Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Saturday afternoon comes up to 66 under partly sunny skies with that same 10 mile an hour breeze. Sunday starts at 45, the coldest reading on this list, and warms to 69 with the wind gone. Up on the ridge at F.D. Roosevelt State Park, between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs, Saturday peaks at 65 and Sunday at 68. Dowdell's Knob faces southeast and catches the sun early, but open ground on a ridge gives up its heat overnight, which is why the mornings there run several degrees colder than Columbus.

Providence Canyon near Lumpkin runs warmer than the ridge and cooler than the river: 50 at 8 AM Saturday, 67 by mid-afternoon, then 47 Sunday morning and 71 Sunday afternoon under full sun. Chewacla near Auburn goes 54 to 68 on Saturday, with a 10 mile an hour afternoon wind, and 53 to 70 on Sunday with no wind. Lakepoint at Eufaula is the warmest spot in the viewing area both days, 70 Saturday afternoon and 73 Sunday afternoon.

Dress in layers you can shed. A jacket is genuinely needed at 8 AM anywhere, and essential on the Pine Mountain ridge where the breeze is already up; by late morning most people will be carrying it. Short sleeves are right for Sunday afternoon almost everywhere.

One more number to plan around. Columbus gets 10 hours and 43 minutes of daylight today, and we are losing about a minute and 42 seconds more each day on the way to the December solstice on the 21st. Sunset in Columbus is 5:44 PM, and in the carved-out ground at Providence Canyon and in the hollows below the Pine Mountain ridge, the light goes well before that. Turn back for the car earlier than feels necessary.
