Best time to hike Sunday near Columbus and Auburn
Sunday morning is the drier window at parks across the Valley, with rain chances at places like the Chattahoochee RiverWalk and Chewacla State Park near Auburn climbing through the afternoon.

If you want a trail this weekend, go early Sunday. Every park in the viewing area has a lower rain chance at 8 AM than it does at 2 PM, and at a few of them the chance roughly doubles between breakfast and mid-afternoon.
Today is the easier day for anyone who does not mind a gray sky. Columbus should reach about 78 with only a 17 percent chance of rain, but the east wind is gusting to 25 mph, so open ground and ridgetops will feel brisk.
On the Chattahoochee RiverWalk between Columbus and Phenix City, 8 AM Sunday looks like 61 degrees, mostly cloudy, with just a 14 percent chance of a shower. By 2 PM it is 70 with that chance up to 36 percent. The east wind holds near 15 mph both times, and the open river corridor is where you will feel it most.
Callaway Gardens at Pine Mountain, up the road from Hamilton, starts at 58 with an 18 percent chance of a stray shower and reaches 66 by 2 PM with a 30 percent chance.
The coolest place in the area Sunday is the Pine Mountain ridge. At F.D. Roosevelt State Park and Dowdell's Knob, between Warm Springs and Manchester, it is 57 at 8 AM and only 64 by 2 PM, the coolest afternoon of any park here. A 15 mph wind at an open overlook with nothing to block it will feel several degrees cooler than the number suggests.
Providence Canyon near Lumpkin, out past Cuthbert, is one of the warm spots: 62 at 8 AM with a 17 percent rain chance, 70 by 2 PM with 36 percent.
Chewacla State Park at Auburn, minutes from Opelika, has the highest afternoon rain chance in the group. It is 62 at 8 AM with a 26 percent chance, then 68 by 2 PM with a 44 percent chance and the wind easing to 10 mph.
Lakepoint State Park at Eufaula is the warmest of all: 62 at 8 AM, 72 by 2 PM, with the rain chance climbing from 26 percent to 43 percent and a steady 10 mph wind.
What to wear depends on how far north you are going. A light jacket makes sense for an 8 AM start at Callaway Gardens or on the ridge above Warm Springs, where it is in the upper 50s, and you will want to keep it on if you stop at an overlook. Down at Lumpkin and Eufaula you can start in long sleeves and be in short sleeves by lunch. Everyone should carry a packable rain shell, because a 30 to 44 percent chance means showers are scattered rather than organized, and the ones that do form will be brief.
The simplest plan for Sunday: be on the trail by 9 and back to the car by 1.
Each day, 8 AM → 2 PM.
