Family identifies 24-year-old woman found dead in Columbus apartment

The family of a 24-year-old woman found deceased Saturday afternoon at the Wilson Homes apartment complex has identified her as Maxine Hightower, who was known to many as “Diamonda Meme.”

As previously reported by CNAW2News.com, Columbus police responded to Building 309 at the Wilson Homes apartment complex near the intersection of Luther Place and 33rd Street after a deceased person was located inside an apartment.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the woman as Maxine Hightower, 24. Bryan said she was pronounced deceased at 1:02 p.m. Saturday at her residence.

According to Bryan, he currently suspects the death may have been due to natural causes. However, because the circumstances surrounding the death required further investigation, patrol officers requested the Violent Crimes Unit respond to the scene. Family members were interviewed, and Hightower’s body has been sent for an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.

In a fundraiser created to help with funeral expenses, Hightower’s sister, Tahkelia Hightower, described Maxine as “a bright light” who loved her family deeply and brought joy and comfort to those around her.

“Fly high, my babygirl. I’m going to keep your name alive,” Tahkelia wrote.

The fundraiser states donations will help cover funeral and memorial expenses while allowing the family to focus on celebrating Maxine’s life.

The investigation remains ongoing pending the results of the autopsy.
